FALL 2011
MARISOL
By José Rivera
There's a war in heaven, God is dying, and he's taking the universe with him: this is the premise of José Rivera's 1993 Obie-Award-winning play, Marisol. The story of a young woman from the Bronx, Marisol is rich with the promise and the disappointments not only of life in New York, but of life itself—a life that, in the play at least, always seems to be mysteriously marked by the transcendent. One of the most important American plays of the past two decades, Marisol will be directed by New Yorker Saheem Ali. Sponsored by Barnard College Department of Theatre/Columbia University Major in Drama and Theatre Arts.

UBU THE KING
A play by Alfred Jarry
“After us, the savage god,” William Butler Yeats remarked after seeing Alfred Jarry’s Ubu the King in 1896. Director Sharon Fogarty brings this European classic to the stage, though “classic” is perhaps the last word its iconoclastic playwright would have applied to it. From its famous first word—MERDRE!— through its glorious anatomy of scatology, gluttony, and homicide, Ubu the King is the instrument of total satire, imagining the grandeur of heroic aspiration as the purest grotesque. Sponsored by Barnard College Department of Theatre/Columbia University Major in Drama and Theatre Arts.

THE EGG-LAYERS
A new play by Lauren Feldman
A co-presentation with New Georges
For the inaugural production of New Plays at Barnard, the Theatre Department joins forces with downtown company New Georges to bring Lauren Feldman's The Egg-Layers to the stage. The Egg-Layers riffs on the Greek myth of Leda and the swan, and brings this disturbing story powerfully into the present: a performance of healing, revenge, and a search for the divine. Directed by Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Alice Reagan.
