Prizes
The Department of Theatre offers several important annual prizes for undergraduate students working in theatre:
a. The Dasha Amsterdam Epstein Awards in Honor of Patricia Denison
Please note, prizes may not be given in a given area pending recommendation of the departmental faculty.
Acting: $1000 for achievement in acting, including acting solo performance and senior thesis festival; awarded to a graduating senior based on body of work in Theatre Department productions. Nominated and selected by Theatre Department faculty. (No student self-nomination.)
Design and Production: $1000 for achievement in design and production, awarded to a graduating senior based on body of work at Barnard/Columbia. Students may self-nominate, and must have taken a class in design in the Department of Theatre to be eligible.

Theory, Criticism, Research: $1000 for the best undergraduate essay written in a Theatre department class or other class such as English/Theatre (ENTH) class or English/Theatre Arts (ENTA) class that fulfills Theatre major requirements; essays written as the Theatre major Senior Thesis in Research may be considered as well. Essays are nominated by faculty who teach these classes, and must be nominated by 9am 15 April. (No student self-nomination.)
Playwriting: $1000 for achievement in playwriting, for a new play on contemporary experience. Students may self-nominate, and must have taken a class in playwriting at Barnard or Columbia to be eligible.

b. Joseph Milton Fee, Jr. Award in Playwriting.
The Prize will be in the amount of $500, and may be awarded to two undergraduate students ($500 each) for an original play written in English "on any aspect of the American experience." Applicants are expected to have formally studied playwriting at Barnard or Columbia. Students may self-nominate.

Applicants may apply for both Epstein and Fee awards in playwriting, and should make separate applications.
c. Kenneth Janes Prize in Theatre
A cash prize will be awarded to a Barnard College junior or senior theatre major who has contributed notably to the theatre program of the Minor Latham Playhouse. All Barnard majors are considered; candidates are nominated by the Theatre Department faculty. (No student self-nomination.)
d. Austin E. Quigley Prize
A cash prize for outstanding artistic and intellectual achievement, given to a Columbia College senior majoring in Drama and Theatre Arts. All Columbia College senior majors are considered; candidates are nominated by the Barnard Theatre Department faculty and by Columbia College faculty teaching courses in the Drama and Theatre Arts major. (No student self-nomination.)
