Marlene, successful director of the Top Girls employment agency, throws a dinner party for famous women throughout history: Pope Joan, Chaucer’s Patient Griselda, Breughel’s Dull Gret. From its opening moments Caryl Churchill’s now-classic play sets contemporary women’s struggles for power, recognition, and equality against the rich background of feminist history. But how does Marlene deal with the women in her own life and business?

Dedicated to the pioneering German playwright Marieluise Fleißer, Katzelmacher expresses playwright and filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s provocative vision of a contemporary anti-theatre, a theatre in which the conformist morality of postwar Europe reverberates through the aimless, violent lives of a younger generation.

Intent on making the future better for women, ardent feminists Celia, Ray, Anne, and Margaret have pledged to live together in a (very) intentional community of young women. But as the rules of their private utopia unravel, their beliefs come into question testing the deepest bonds of their friendship — and sanity.
This new play, co-commissioned by Barnard and downtown theatre company New Georges, presents an original, contemporary riff on Hamlet. The play is directed by Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Alice Reagan, features thesis performer India Choquette, and is stage managed by thesis student Amelia Lembeck.
There will be a reception following the Thursday night performance and a post-show discussion following the Friday night performance.
